In cold blood
This series of photographs comes from one single thing, empathy. This is the reason why I am visiting some roma families in small villages across Hungary. I gradually became aware of not being able to follow my everyday routine knowing that these people need all the helping hand they can have. I realized that the killing of their relatives, including a five year old boy, is a call that must be met. I realized that regardless of lacking enough money or resources, such as a car, their concerns must be shared and their stories must be heard. When I visited the first family that were attacked by a far-right wing group in February 2009, the alleged attackers were already in custody.
Since last August I have been visiting two families on a regular basis. I am planning to meet all those families and people who were attacked and I am planning to keep on taking photographs and listening to their stories. I intend to collect their stories and photographs in a book for mainly two reasons.
First, I think of this compilation of photographs and stories as an 'evidence', or as a realization of what happened. I think it is important to underline the fact that because a society is not openly and freely discussing of what happened, the fact that it happened still remains a fact. Moreover, I see almost no sight of empathy regarding these families but I see a massive flow of news about pity crime committed by roma people.
Second, I think that tragedy might be news worthy but what matters really are the days and weeks that follow these events. This collection of stories intends to tell how lives are being altered by the aftermath of brutality. I am interested in recording
Finally, I believe that a compilation like this is not just about the families that were attacked but about everyone who were attacked bacause of their race, religion or sexual orientation. This is also a message for them ...
I also hope and willing to influence others to visit these families since the local governments cannot provide mental help for them.
I believe that from time to time it is necessary to remember ourselves that the news from yesterday may have an impact on someone's entire life
(their pain must be understood, their stories must be listened and documented. )
If I wanted to raise children in a country where race, religion and political viewpoint is not a matter of....... the moment to start working on a country like that is here. If I had learned something from the history of my own country and from the history of the Civil Right Movement, or from the victory speech of President Obama
I realised that I can no longer be a photographer only to make beautiful abstract photographs, or simply making a living
They did not mean to become disitinct in the way they had became.
